A leading insurance provider is seeking a Senior Specialist Underwriter for its West Region, covering California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Idaho. With multiple branch offices across 10 states, the company specializes in delivering quality insurance services to niche industries such as construction, forest products, and oil & gas. This position offers a hybrid/remote work schedule with required business travel to office locations and customer sites.
Position Summary
The Senior Specialist Underwriter will evaluate commercial insurance applications to underwrite new and renewal business for an assigned group of agencies. The role requires strong analytical, communication, territory management, and marketing skills.
Essential Functions
- Assess and decide whether to accept, decline, or modify insurance applications, recognizing exposure changes during the policy period.
- Evaluate, quote, and negotiate prices for new and renewal policies, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, ISO, NCCI, and company guidelines.
- Manage agency relationships, including prospecting, appointments, growth, and profit-sharing opportunities.
- Conduct sales and marketing activities to solicit new business and retain existing accounts.
- Achieve profitable underwriting results and support business development in the assigned territory.
- Formulate sales budgets, set premium and loss ratio goals, and forecast business opportunities.
- Maintain and promote strong agency relationships through regular visits and reviews.
- Make underwriting decisions within company guidelines and seek exceptions when appropriate.
- Assist with account reviews and workflow management.
- Mentor less experienced underwriters and contribute to team development.
- Stay informed about regulatory and competitive changes in the industry.
- Participate in research, analysis, and development projects as assigned.
- Complete special projects such as attending association meetings, developing endorsements, and analyzing underwriting data.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent experience.
- 5-7 years of experience in:
- Field underwriting in industries such as construction, forest products, manufacturing, or oil & gas.
- Underwriting new and renewal business, including pricing and policy form knowledge.
- Exposure analysis and risk management during policy periods.
- Agency management, including growth, development, and prospecting.
- External sales, including new business cultivation and customer retention.
- Valid U.S. work authorization and driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Salary Range
$110,000-$145,000, commensurate with experience.
